n. Entertainment

the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, a non-profit organization advocating for the Canadian film and television industry.

Type: 1. Origin This organization was created in 1979 as the Academy of Canadian Cinema. Forerunner groups created the Canadian Film Awards, first awarded in 1949, which were renamed the Genie Awards in 1980. In 1985, the academy was renamed the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television when it took on the Canadian television industry from ACTRA. The Gemini Awards (for English-language television) and les Prix Gémeaux replaced the ACTRA Awards in 1986 and 1987, respectively. In 2012, the ACCT combined both the Canadian English-language awards from film (Genies) and television (Geminis) into one award and one ceremony, the Canadian Screen Awards, which were first presented in 2013. Say goodbye to the Genies and the Geminis, and get ready for a sleek and elegant new statuette that will honour Canada's outstanding achievements on screens everywhere: in the cinema, on TV screens or on your laptop. Helga Stephenson, CEO of the recently revamped Academy of Canadian Cinema, introduced the new award at a media conference on Tuesday. Her timing is apt in announcing the marriage of the Genies and the Geminis. This week last year, the Geminis were handed out the night before the opening of the Toronto International Film Festival. No doubt a nickname will come later, but for now the official name for the new prize is the Canadian Screen Awards. The first batch of them will be handed out on Sunday, March 3, 2013 during a two-hour live telecast in prime time on CBC's main network.
